What is Kendo (剣道)?
Kendo literally means the "way of the sword". It is a modern sword art that formed as a result of many different sword styles in Japan coming together for an effective and safe way to practice the sword art.
Kendo uses armor called Bogu(防具) and a bamboo sword called Shinai (竹刀)to practice sword art. By using these two in combination, the intensity of a real life combat without the risk of a major injury is achieved.
However, given that most of us do not carry swords around any more, the focus of kendo is one step beyond the techniques. The ultimate motive of kendo is to develop character with etiquette, to understand that we exists because everyone else exists, and to treat each other in meaningful way while keeping one's identity solid. There are several ways to practice kendo: practice it as a traditional martial art, competitive sport, or a recreational activity. Which way is correct? They are all correct as long as it develops character.
